1. Introduction

In the exhilarating world of domotics and building technology there are thousands of different applications on the market that deal with the main issues of building installation: lighting, heating, energy management, ventilation and security. In this paper we have opted, however, for one particular system that covers the whole spectrum of applications found in today's building. This choice can be justified by the simple acknowledgment that most applications are interdependent and can thus not be separated. It is, in our opinion, thus very important to adjust all systems to each other and integrate them in one main system.

In this case study, we have taken a closer look at the ABB I-bus® EIB/KNX technology. First, a short introduction to the system will be given, with answers to core questions concerning this technology. After, each application separately will be meticulously investigated. Throughout the case study, there will also be a focus on the financial aspect of the implementation of such a system, which is off course also of great importance.

1.1. What is the ABB I-bus®EIB/KNX system?

The ABB I-bus® EIB/KNX system is a product of the global concern ABB. This multinational is an engineering company which core business are automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The system itself is an "intelligent" building installation that meets the highest requirements for applications in modern home and building control. The main advantages of the system are:

 Incorporation of all building functions: lighting, heating, security, energy management, etc.

 Easy adaptation to requirements
