Why CNC programming is the Career for Me

As a child, I was always acquiring bicycles, go-karts and motorcycles in different states of disrepair. I enjoyed seeing what types of contraptions I could create out of them. I also spent a lot of time playing with the breakthrough technology of the day, the Atari video gaming system and the Commodore 64.

As an adult, I am interested in pursuing a career as a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine programmer. I enjoy working with computers. I also very much enjoy manufacturing parts and putting together assemblies. Working as a CNC machine programmer would join those worlds perfectly for me.

I have based my college education on pursuing this goal. I hold a Certificate in Machine Tool Technology from Linn-Benton Community College and am currently enrolled in the CNC Machine program there. At the end of spring term 2008 I will have achieved enough credits to obtain an Associates of General Studies. I do, however, plan to take more computer-based classes in the future.

In addition to my education, I have approximately two years’ practical experience working in machine shops. Most of my experience is running CNC lathes and CNC mills. I also have worked with manual lathes and mills. I have manufactured parts from many different types of material. I worked for awhile making wood components. I have found machining with plastic to be very easy. I feel my expertise is in running metal parts and that seems to be what I am most comfortable doing.

I believe I possess the following attributes. I am well spoken with a neat appearance; pleasant disposition; enjoy all types of people; excellent memory for names, faces and detail; excel in math skills; have computer skills; hard working; dependable; honest and take initiative.

Given my education, experience and personal attributes I believe I have a great base on which I can build a lasting career in CNC machine programming. I believe I would be an asset to any organization. I think this is the logical direction I would go, carrying on a childhood hobby into an adult career. I am a very fortunate individual to be able to make a career out of my life long passion.
