Synopsis

Sybil is a young grade school substitute teacher who has a breakdown in front of her students, and is taken in to be psychologically examined. When examined by Dr. Wilbur, Sybil shows signs of hysteria, and Dr. Wilbur believes that Sybil has multiple disorders. Throughout the film, Sybil battles through about 16 personalities and has a hard time trying to find her true self.

Criteria Satisfied in Film

Sybil was accurate because in the film she has more than two personalities. In the film Sybil experiences blackouts where she doesn't remember triggering off another personality. Also in the film, certain sounds and certain objects trigger traumatic memories that cause Sybil to switch personalities. This film definitely encompasses the main symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Another disorder that this movie satisfies is PSTD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). PSTD is introduced into the film when Sybil switched to Peggy and Marsha, and when she sees the canes and hears the swings. It brings her back to her childhood when her mother forced her to wear too small shoes and when she sees herself hanging from the ceiling of what looks like the basement. This movie did an excellent job recreating these disorders to the public eye; because before this movie not many people had been diagnosed with this (DID) Dissociative Identity Disorder, or even knew that it was actually a disorder.
