Just fifteen minutes a day of independent reading can expose you to 1,000,000 words of text each year. In my opinion, I think everyone should read books independently. There are many benefits that come from reading. First of all, reading makes you more knowledgeable. Secondly, reading also helps to keep you happy. Finally, reading also has many health benefits as well.

First of all, reading books makes you smarter and more informed. For example, books boost your vocabulary. We learn 5-15% of all the words we know through reading. On average you learn 52.7 new words per 1058 words in adult books. Books also make you think more. Have you ever been reading a book and all of a sudden there's a mystery at hand? When you read those books your mind thinks and processes information and tries to solve the mystery.

In addition to making your mind think more and process information, reading also gives you a glimpse into other cultures and places expands your horizon seeing other cities and places through the descriptions on the pages and your vast imagination. In books you learn through the eyes of the characters about their ways of life. In text you can visually see cities through imagery. Places around the all around world are at your very fingertips.

Another reason you should read for at least 15 minutes a day independently is it keeps you in high spirits for instance, reading is a stress reliever. During a British study, groups of people were put through stressful activities and then spent a half an hour doing other activities such as playing video games, watching T.V., ect. The stress level of those who read dropped 67% more than the other groups. Reading also improves your empathy. Reading strengthens your ability to understand others feelings. While reading you see the world in the eyes of the character. You learn about their hopes, their fears, their sorrows and you immerse yourself into their world. By doing this you learn how to learn more about people and their feelings, needs, concerns, and their emotional state. Your self-esteem builds from reading. You become better informed and more of an expert on topics that you read about, this turns into self-esteem. Since you read so well and know so much on the topic, people will look to you for answers.

Furthermore, reading has many health benefits as well. For example, studies have shown that reading can prevent Alzheimer's and Dementia. Reading keeps you mentally
