Key Elements of the Supervisory Process

There are four key elements of a supervisory process were explored by Shulman in 1993, each phase was known as The Phases of Work (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007). Each process describes how managers are to help employees interact with different systems while performing his or her duties at work. The first phase is preliminary, which occurs before the supervisor meet with an employee. This phase allows the supervisor to develop empathy or adjust his or her feelings for the employee before a meeting can be arranged to meets with the employee. The second phase is the beginning phase in which there is a clarification of the role of a supervisor. This phase also states supervisor should obtain feedback from employee regarding what employees believe the role of a supervisor should or should not be while discussing the proper way to use authoritarian management. The middle phase is called the work phase, the work phase works well with a group of skills placed together to assists clients better. These skills allow supervisors to help workers develop action plans for clients or themselves on how to deal with different feelings or other issues. The final work phase is the ending and transition phase. This phase may come as a result of the supervisor gaining a promotion, voluntary resignation, layoff because of cutbacks, or termination (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007). The effective way to have the ending phase is for the supervisor to announce the date of his or her last day, say goodbyes by celebrating, and allow each employee to share his or her feeling. Human resources department can conduct an exit interview with the supervisor; this would be the appropriate time to share feedback concerning thoughts on how the organization can improve in certain areas.
