Abstract

The cultural relationship between the United States and world has never been one-sided. On the contrary, America was and continues to be as much a consumer of foreign intellectual and artistic influences as it has been a shaper of the worldЎЇs entertainment and tastes. Indeed, American culture has spread throughout the world precisely because it has drawn on foreign styles and ideas. Americans have then reassembled and repackaged the cultural products they received from abroad, and retransmitted them to the rest of the planet. In effect, Americans have specialized in selling the fantasies and folklore of other people back to them. This is the reason AmericaЎЇs culture has been so popular for so long in so many places.

Anti-American demonstrations, super imposition of American culture, pollution of the environment, loss of jobs, domination of the U.S. products, people, and businesses are some of the concerns that might lead one to believe that globalization is synonymous to Americanization. This paper is going to observe globalization and Americanization from a unique prospective that reflects their influences on film industry around the world.

Introduction

What is Americanization? Does globalization mean Americanization? Are these two terms synonymous? Not necessarily. Americanization has a different connotation to many people. Some feel it is the influx of American culture, values, and violence that is sometimes commonly depicted and glorified in Hollywood movies. Others feel it is the political, social, cultural, and economic domination of a superpower like the United States.

Americanization is a cultural rather than a legal term, not to be confused with naturalization and the process of becoming a legal citizen of the United States. It represents a conservative social pressure exerted upon culturally marginalized individuals or groups (or perceived to be so) to become integrated into ÐŽomainstreamÐŽ± culture, whatever that might be at any given time.

In the film industry, Americanization means an invasion of Americanized values and story-telling styles to other countries film industry. In this meaning, Americanization has, on a large scale, impaired the progress of globalization and cultural diversity.

Globalization and Americanization in Film Industry

1. Basic Concepts

1.1 The definition of globalization

Values can play a role in defining globalization. A definition of globalization as "Americanization" or, perhaps, the "McDonaldization," of the world presents globalization as a process driven by American consumer culture that rolls over other cultures. On the other hand, another definition of globalization would highlight its cross-cultural impact, taking into account the nature of globalization as a way cultures interact and learn from each other. However, in our point of view, we inclined to the latter one, which define globalization from a much wider prospective.

1.2 The definition of cultural globalization

In the Globalization time, as trade contacts, transmission of culture and information transfer become more and more frequently, the traditional concept of area changes a lot. Thus, the communication between different areas turns to be more convenience. The function of a government is partly replaced by an invisible power, global governance. This invisible power is caused by Globalization. What we can do now, is not against the globalization process, but recomposes them, let them cross-fertilization, and leads the new culture to a new destiny.

Culture globalization brings cultural resemblance and cultural diversity. We do not think culture resemblance will quite benefic the culture interchange, but it is obviously that the resemblance gives a shock to the culture at a growing degree. Pre-eminent culture's dissemination in the whole world always influences the development of minority culture. Culture infiltration is through the globalization process, especially Americanization.

Facing such a cultural aggression, what is the developed trend of the culture around the world? We have mentioned that we prefer a culture transfer with diversity. Only the culture recruit the different information but still base on its own characteristic, can become a new but more charming culture.

Consequently we consider globalization brings two affections to the culture, but only culture keeps its diversity, can lead the world to a healthy globalization.
