Diversity is good for varied skills, ideas, and influences. To ensure that work teams are diverse, a manager will seek to hire diverse employees. He can advertise and recruit from different areas such as colleges or agencies. He will look for diversity in age, gender, race, etc. This is not to say that he will not concern himself with their job skills, but he will go to different areas to attract employees from different demographics. Teams rich in diversity work well when there is a positive atmosphere toward diversity. This means that those in minority are encouraged, supported, respected, etc. It also helps when teams are equally diverse. For example if a team is made up of mostly dog lovers, and one token cat lover; it's not likely that the cat lover will stick around. However, if there is a couple of dog lovers, a couple of cat lovers, a couple of horse lovers, and a couple of bird lovers; the team will be more equally balanced. This means less turn over.

Diversity in the work place strengthens a team as a whole. Having employees that are stronger in different skills also a team to perform different assignments at higher skill levels than teams that focus strengths in only one department. Having different ethic backgrounds in a group also allows you to market to a large consumer group as well. Though some of the people may be lacking skills in one area the other team member strengths will take control. You can also cross train your employees to have stronger skills through the group in the long run. This allows you to build a very strong group, expanding in the future, and using your very diverse (well trained group) as managers in the new departments.

In the long run having a diverse team/group it allows you to cross train within the group and expand the knowledge, skill levels, and knowledge. Their new abilities allow them to move up in the company, and expand your department/business.

Diversity plays a major role within any company and managers will use diversity to ensure the management and staff are on the same page and work is being done. When staffing within a company hiring the diverse employees that apply or the position will create equality among the staff. When filling positions looks for different styles of people and personalities that may work better together with other staff to ensure a positive outcome for the company.

One main strategy to managing diversity is to keep an open mind. Just because someone may come from a different background of belief, color, sex, or religion does not mean they are not a perfect piece to the puzzle. Teams are a puzzle and no two pieces are alike. Being able to accept people for who they are can often times bring together a group of people who can take their ideas and put them together just like a puzzle.
