Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations. This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large.

Development and analysis

The debate about CSR has been said to have began in the early 20th century, amid growing concerns about large corporations and their power[1]. The ideas of charity and stewardship helped to shape the early thinking about CSR in the US.

Toyota conducts afforestation programs to contribute to the prevention of global warming as well as educational activities to raise understanding of the environment and undertakes reforestation experiments.

Taking "coexistence with people and nature" as its fundamental principle, Toyota is using trees to improve the environment (afforestation) and conducts environmental education and study programs targeting the general public.

In its pursuit of being a company that contributes to measures designed to achieve global regeneration, Toyota has been conducting the Grant Program to support environmental activities implemented by NPOs and other non-profit private groups under the theme of "Environmental Technology and Human Resource Development Contributing to Environmental Revitalization and Conservation."

The TOYOTA Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute, a training facility that can accommodate approximately 100 overnight guests, is located in the village of Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, and makes use of the local culture and natural environment of Shirakawa-Go to undertake environmental preservation through hands-on environmental educational programs for children and adults.
