Abstract

Adolescents face many different changes and obstacles during the course of puberty and transitioning to maturity. Bullying affects everyone and not just the victim. Behavior in children who are bullied become different from those who do not suffer from this terrible ordeal. In both girls and boys self-esteem and self-perception can become damaged.

Bullying is an issue that needs to be studied in human development. According to Smokowski P. R., & Kopasz K. H. (2005) " Children and adolescents who are bullies are at high risk for substance abuse, academic problems and violence to others later in life". Being a bully or being bullied will affect a child and many levels. Depending on how severe the bullying is will determine the outcome of the effects that the person will have later on in life. Since bullying plays such a dramatic role in ones then bullying plays an intricate part on human development and behavior. NICHD researches said that depression is risk for anyone that was either bullied or a bully ( internet, www.nichd.nih.gov). Study is needed in the area of bulling when it involves human behavior. Bullying is causing life altering actions for children and adolescents. If more studies are conducted to prevent and solve these issues the behavioral changes that cause negative impacts on children's lives may drop dramatically.

There are three types of bullying behaviors, verbal bullying, social bullying and physical bullying. Verbal bullying can include writing or saying negative things about someone. This may include but is not limited to; teasing others, calling them by derogate names, touting, threatening and inappropriate comments. Teasing and name calling can really put a damper on someone's self-esteem. Being made fun of in front of others can make someone feel like they would just disappear. Touting and thrusting others is a form of verbal bullying, Words are powerful and can cause harm emotionally and mentally . Verbal Bullying can turn an individual into a laughing stock and give that person the kind of attention that they are not looking for. Social bullying includes spreading rumors about someone and embarrassing them in public.
