• The English awarded people who established their own colony.
• Colonists went to America to institute a purer form of worship and improving social position.
• Some people only worked for 2 hours, while others watched and enjoyed.
• 1616, the joint stock companies went to the general public, as an investment on Virginia.
• Native Americans tried to drive out the colonists in 1622 and 1644
• In 1617, they started to grow tobacco for profits in Jamestown, John Rolfe started it.
• Headright, 50 acre land to anyone who covered their own transportation to America
• Indentured servants were cheated at the end of their service

Assignment 3

• Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower, landed at Plymouth Rock, and gave us Thanksgiving day
• Some came for religious, patriotic,
• signed the Mayflower Compact to create a democratic society in New England
• W/out Squanto & NA help, Euros not survived
• Puritans want to start a new religious colony, 1630
• The lord wanted them to reform the church , stand as a beacon of righteousness for Christian world
• Formed a new colony to transform a religious vision into reality
• Congregationalism, each village church is ind. to outside interference
•  Women provided testimony- Confession of faith
•  Winthrop moved quickly to transform the social structure into a colonial gov
• Williams preached, extreme, separatism, banished to Providence to spread idea
• No one persecuted for religious beliefs in Rhode Island.

• William Penn- envisioned a Quaker sanctuary
• The Middle colonies- diverse; language
• The duke of York got awarded the land to other people.
• Land later sold to Quakers, the land was separated into East and West, neither region prospered
• Quaker= inner light, pacifists, humble
• “Frame of Governmet”, penn’s ideas were pitches in here, devised a genius gov
• Very diverse group in Pennsylvania
• Wheat was prospering in Penn’s land
• Penn est. a unicameral
• Barbados became overpopulated, elites starting moving to Carolinas
• Oglethorpe, Georgia as a asylum and garrison
