Alex Rider is a fourteen-year-old kid who travels all the time. Life is anything but normal for Alex. He is a spy for M16, which is a secret company with spies and special tech people. Alex gets called on for very dangerous and surprising missions all the time. Alex realizes spying has its ups and downs...and downs...and downs... and downs. He gets to travel a lot but it is never like a vacation because there is always something dangerous around every corner. Sometimes he thinks he will relax but it never seems to turn out that way.

The story begins with Alex lying on his back on the beach after a nice swim in the Mediterranean Sea in the South of France. He was watching the people on the beach when he recognizes one face out of everyone...Yassen Gregorvich, a contract killer who had murdered his uncle. Alex follows Yassen to a restaurant where he finds him talking to France's favorite singer... Damian Cray. Mr. Cray or should I say Sir Damian Cray was knighted by the Queen, but is really just another murderer who works with Yassen Gregorvich. Alex wonders what these two are planning next. Although the two men are very different, they both have one thing in common; they both don't like Alex Rider because he ruins all their plans.

One part of this story is very muddy. Yassen finds out that Alex has intruded on his boat to get some information about him. Since he intruded and got caught by one of Yassen's mean Raoul, he was given two choices. The choices were to be shot or try to survive a bullfight in France's Bull Dome. Yassen said, "You might say it is a choice between the bull and the bullet." The bull weighed 1,500 lbs. at least but Alex still didn't want to hurt the bull. He had to escape. During the bull fight Alex notices one of Yassen's men Franco reaching for his gun. Alex decided instead of hurting the bull he would hurt the bodyguard, so he threw the spear at him and it landed deep in his shoulder.
