Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. He came from a poor family and eventually became a great leader for our country. His life ended in a horrible way, when he was shot. Abraham Lincoln had a very difficult and interesting life.

Abraham had two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. His younger brother died as a baby. His parents had to move from Kentucky to Indiana because someone took their land. In Indiana they did not have their own land, so they stayed on public land and lived by farming on a small piece of land and hunting.

When Abraham Lincoln was nine his mother died and he was forced to work to help his family. His father remarried and his stepmother wanted him to read. There wasn't a lot to read, so Abraham would walk miles to get a book. Abraham Lincoln only had a total of about 18 months of education.

When Abraham was 22 years old he and his family moved to Illinois, this is where Abraham began to do things on his own. He made a living cutting wood and other hard jobs. He also worked as a shopkeeper, postmaster, and later a general store owner. This is where he learned to meet and talk to people and became known by the people in the community.

When the Black Hawk War broke out in 1832 the local people elected Abraham Lincoln to be their captain. After the war Lincoln decided to become a lawyer. He taught himself law by reading law books from England. He became a lawyer in 1837. He then moved to Springfield, Illinois, to work as a lawyer.

In 1842, Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd. Mary Todd came from a well-known family in Kentucky. They had four children. All of their children died in childhood, except one.

From 1847-1859 Abraham was in politics and worked his way up and was nominated President in 1861 by the Republican Party. During this time the country was divided because of slavery. The southern states had separated from the rest of the states because they wanted slavery. The rest of the states that did not separate were called the union, they did not believe in slavery. President Abraham Lincoln did not want slavery. So, the Civil War was started while he was president.

The Civil War was one of the most deadly wars in American History. This war caused many families to fight against each other. A person's family in the South would fight against their family in the North.
