CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Human Resource Management is a function, which is mainly concerned with people at work and with their relationship within the organization. It is the resource, which plans, allocates and provides for all other resources in organization. It is a concept, which is gaining importance in the modern industrial world. Many of the organizations have come forward to give special attention towards developing their human resources as they have realized the fact that "man behind the machine should be given importance". 'HRM is an activity that should not and cannot be viewed in isolation. It is a part of the total organizational environment, is conditioned by it and in turn conditions it' (Sorab Sadri and Pranabesh Ray, 1993). The role of the human resource function is dramatically changing and has systematically gained prominence in the organization.
