World War 1

World War 1 began in August of 1914. The war lasted until November of 1918. The war was know as "the Great War".

World War 1 began as an argument over land. The 2 countries were fighting over "no man's land." They were fighting so that one side would win the land then they would stop fighting, that is why this war is also known as "the war to end war." The 2 countries that started the war were France and Germany. The "no man's land" was on the boarder of both countries. Germany and France had been fighting over the land for many years. As it was on the boarder they never knew who's land it really was.

The war lasted 4 very long years. Many men lost their lives to this war. Nearly 400,000 men died in war.

The United States became involved in the war early on. Despite our claim to remain neutral we were sending supplies to our aliases. We sent in many men to help stop the war. Almost 50,000 American's died in World War 1.

The President of the time, Woodrow Wilson, put aside his political agenda to help keep our country together as we went into war. Because of his leadership skills he is named as one of America's greatest presidents. Woodrow Wilson was president through the whole war. He came up with a plan to help save the citizens of the United States of America. He also came up with a new banking system to help save our economy. During World War 1 Wilson's main goal was to keep our country together. When the news of war spread to the United states he went to his cabinet and they began to discuss what they could do and what they were going to do. When two of his cabinet members were against going to war he told then ," Men you have not voted until you agree to go to war." He would not let them go until they both agreed to go help with the war.

The armistice treaty between the France and Germany was signed in a railway carriage in woods near Compiegne on November 11, 1918, and marked the end of the First World War on the Western Front. The Armistice was agreed at 5am on November 11, to come into effect at 11am, Paris time (for which reason the occasion is sometimes referred to as "the eleventh of the eleventh of the eleventh"). It was the result of a hurried and desperate process to end the war.

*The following terms were set by the Allied powers for the Armistice.

1. Effective six hours after signing.

2. Immediate clearing of Belgium, France, Alsace-Lorraine, to be concluded within 14 days. Any troops remaining in these areas to be interned or taken as prisoners of war.
