What the youth ought to do in their free time

Free time is that time spent without doing work, be it at the workplace or at home

(domestic chores). Free time is most commonly used for recreation; it's also known as leisure

time. For free time to get consideration as free, no activity that is compulsory ought to be done

during such time. Recent surveys on how youths spend their leisure time have brought up very

fascinating results. The absolute fact is that there is a big difference between what the urban and

rural youths choose to do, but there is clear difference regarding thought patterns of urban males

and females. How the youth spend time is different and interesting at the same time. The

mindset, style and mood of the youth of today are totally different.

The youth today have lots of free time and have significant possibilities of engaging in

sex and drug abuse, irresponsible behavior or delinquency (Finn 2006). Today, teenagers spend

40% of the leisure time they have at home, therefore the requirement of leisure activities of a

constructive nature. Today's youth don't have time for marveling at nature (the beauty that

nature offers) such as birds, greenery, mountains and trees. Instead, today's trend is listening to

songs, watching movies, reading comic books, playing video games among others. In regard to

sexes, girls prefer spending maximum time listening to songs and watching soap operas, while

boys opt for video games or looking at sports on television. Girls, like always, also love

gossiping and looking for pictures of the celebrities they like whereas boys like driving. A very

small percentage of youth today likes to read books or study.

One way in which the youth should utilize their free time in a constructive way is via

sports. The youth take part in sports for a variety of reasons such as having fun, fitness and

athletic scholarships. The most significant advantage of sporting activities is its contribution

toward a fit and healthy lifestyle. Most sports are full of fun, like sports done in teams. One can

do sports practice on their own or with their friends, and they also get to meet new people.

However, the disadvantage is the possibility of injury; one can fall down easily and obtain

bruises or break a leg or an arm, consequently hindering physical effort for some time. Many

youths do sports because of the desire of being like their favorite stars; for example, they'd like

to be as professional at soccer as Messi, thus lots
