1. In Western Europe, the 300-mile radius of Paris, ideas of democracy, parliamentary, government, industry-based economy were improved o invented. The French, Dutch, English and Swiss were the major players. Geneva, Amsterdam, London and Paris were to become centers of learning

2. Louis XIV after age of 23 controlled every aspect of life from foreign to internal affairs. In foreign affairs Louis XIV created a favorable personality that everyone from England to Turkey looked up to.

3. Louis XIV, like the Hapsburg before him wanted a universal monarchy. He wanted all of the Spanish land from the Americas, from the Iberians to the Low Countries. Leaders feared the French power as much they feared the Hapsburg that came before.

4. Balance of power is when power is separated evenly between states. If one state has too much power, a coalition is employed to create equilibrium. The other states in his case, the German states, Austria, England and of course Holland created an alliance that creates economic and political separation from France. In history, alliances were made in disregard to religion, or language, but for an increase of power are to protect their independence.

Identifications

-Grand Monarque: like "Sun King", this was another nickname for Louis XIV, this one meant literally "great monarch", but really meant Louis the Great.

-Sun King: nickname for Louis, symbolized how he was the center of France in all affairs.

-Charles II: incompetent, physically sick, symbolized the deteriorating power of the Spanish.

-Franche Comte: free country of Burgundy.

-universal monarchy: where one monarchy would have tremendous influence over other monarchies
