Vegetarianism

I scanned my environment for ideas. I asked myself, "What is it with meat?" I realized most food retail establishments in the Philippines were into low-priced, low nutrition and unhealthy commercial food products. The market had very few healthier alternatives. There and then I knew there had to be something better. I became curious about vegetarianism. So one day to satisfy my thirst, I surfed the web for answers. I was astonished with the answers and information I found out. One English website showed statistics that 10% of UK's population is vegetarian and growing and 25% of the world population is trying to reduce meat consumption. One main reason for this is the plague of animal based sickness spreading globally such as Mad Cow Disease which is the effect of using Genetically Modified Organisms in feeds, fertilizers and products. Hand in hand with this global trend, I learned about the growing consciousness in organically grown food. There were important social and economic factors that were making it increasingly costly to eat meat. Governments spend hundreds of billions of dollars on medical care for problems such as heart disease and cancer, which are perfectly preventable on a vegetarian diet. I even discovered that some great scientists, one of whom is Albert Einstein were vegetarians. But what made me excited about the different articles I read was that the fact that the whole essence of the vegetarian lifestyle had a deep longing for change. The word vegetarian, comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning "whole, sound, fresh, or lively," The original meaning of the word implies a balanced philosophical and moral sense of life, a lot more than just a diet of vegetables and fruits.

Imagine a healthy world where people do not have to worry about diseases... a world where hunger is not a concern. A place where people maximize the health giving nutrients of the food they take. Now, imagine a sustainable world... a life-enhancing society that meets its present needs without compromising the needs of the future generation...a place where everyone can have equal access to opportunities.
