Truman Capote

Truman Capote, in my eyes, lived a very drastic childhood. Truman Capote grew

up without a mother or a father around to see him go off to his first school. Truman

Capote somehow taught himself how to read and write. However, that’s beside the point.

He had to won two O. Henry awards for his short stories he had written. To me that

seems impossible; however that is why he is one of the most remembered authors of his time.

Truman Capote’s actual birth name is Truman Streckfus Persons. However, that

changed when his mother divorced and eventually re-married. Between that time his

biological parents divorced when Truman was four years of age. Truman then grew up

living with neither of his parents and growing up with relatives on his mother’s side.

Truman taught himself how to read and write by the time he was in the first grade.

When he was eleven, he was writing three hours everyday in a note book.

When he moved back with his mom and new step-father, his father re-named

him to Truman Garcia Capote. Truman started to attend the Trinity School in New York.

Following that he went to the St. Josephs Military Academy. His mother made him go

there because she wanted him to become manlier. This was a result of, because he was

either gay or bisexual. Finally in 1939, Truman moved to Greenwich, Connecticut and

graduated, at age seventeen, from Greenwich High School.

After he finished school, Truman worked at the New Yorker for two years. In

1943, Truman had made a huge accomplishment. He had written his first novel, Summer

Crossing.

Then finally in 1959, Truman was interested in a gruesome murder of the Cutler

family. This was a multiple murder in small town Holcomb, Kansas. He wrote In Cold

Blood to express what had happened. It had took him six years to collect all the

information and write the non-fiction novel.

“Fame is good for one thing-they will cash your check in a small town.” This is a

quote Truman Capote once said. Capote became famous because of his best seller In

Cold Blood. Capote was also well known because he had occasionally written a few

magazine articles. People also had know who he was by the other books he had written.

In total he had written six novels, three plays or screenplays, Eight short stories(two in

which he had won two O. Henry awards for)and two non fictions. Truman Capote’s

books appealed to, I would say, Middle School students and young adults.

Truman Capote stood five feet and four inches and was very popular at one time.
