Tourism is the global phenomenon in today’s age. Tourism over the decades has experienced an unstoppable growth. Its business volume even surpasses that of food products, automobiles and oil exports. Today it’s among the fastest growing economic sector worldwide. According to UNWTO, "Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes." (Walker and Walker 2011)

Tourism is turning out to be the major source Income for many of the developing countries worldwide. The widespread effect of tourism has brought various economic and employment benefits in many related sectors such as construction, telecommunications and even agriculture. Tourism brings many benefits but at the same time mass tourism has brought various negative impacts. Tourism can only sustain for the longer period of time if properly maintained and not letting the negative impacts on the host community outweighing the financial benefits. (Simm 2011)  When tourism has encouraged the development of infrastructure at the same time it has also led to the drastic negative change to the host community.

1.2 INTRODUCTION OF HOI AN – THE HERITAGE CITY OF VIETNAM

A historical city, Hoi An is a great example of an extremely well-preserved city known for its architectural beauty. It is located in Viet Nam’s central Quang Nam Province.  It was a small scale South-East Asian trading port dating from 15th to the 19th century. The town is unique heritage in its own reflecting the fusion of native and various foreign cultures namely Chinese, Japanese and European influences. Hoi An is termed as one of the most peaceful towns in Vietnam, drawing large number of tourists to its picturesque wooden houses, pagodas, street-side eateries ,beaches and hundreds of tailor shops . It was declared a world heritage site by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in year 1999. (UNESCO 2005)  

The heritage city was untouched by the Vietnam- American war where still every corner of the streets has some stories to tell. Being mostly closed for the vehicle traffic the town is accessed through the foot or by the bicycle. Thu Bon River flows through Hoi An so boating is also a popular means of transport out there. (Watson 2016) Hoi An also has wonderful coastline. Cua dai and An Bang beach are popular for diving and windsurfing activities. Despite being a popular destination with the visitors it has still been able to retain its old world charm and is almost free from traffic and pollution of 21st century  .(pfeiffer 2016)

2.0 IMPACTS OF TOURISM IN THE HERITAGE CITY – HOI AN

Tourism has led to winds of the change in city of Hoi An , it has brought various impacts both positive and negative in economic, social and environmental aspect of Hoi An.

2.1 ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF HOI AN

2.1.1Positive Impacts

Today, tourism is Hoi An ‘s  principle monetary movement as it is providing employments to the local as well as the government .e.g.  Transport service, tour guiding and specially hotels and restaurant . At the same time the government is also generating the income from this sources they are reserving waste lands for resort development and 5 star hotel construction. (Engelhardt 2008))

In December 1999, the Ancient Town of Hoi A was engraved as a World Heritage site. Empowered by the upsurge of local in active tourism development movement the national, common and civil governments have put resources into the long term preservation of the assembled legacy of Hoi an to advance its advancement as a tourist destination. Government owned old built structures are changed over into the cultural museums and offices for travelers. The municipal government has formulated a system for collecting entrance fee from tourist to add to the financing of the restoration of structures such as pagodas and temple and to support of all built heritage in Hoi An. The buildings owned by the locals now are changing over their home for home stay programs as they are empowered by their government ,they are properly trained and must meet various criteria’s set by government for eligibility. This is worthwhile as occupants can get direct economic advantages from the developing tourism exchange, while holding responsibility for keeping on living in their memorable properties.(Tang 2014)

Hoi an also produces traditional products like wooden doors, gates and religious statuary. Kim bong village also known as carpentry village in the outskirts of the city is popular for its wood work creation. This is not only the attraction for the tourist  as at  the same time they are also making tourist to take training to make local souvenir.(trip advisor)

An Bang is one of only a handful few remaining extends of shoreline that still remains untouched with the advancement and westernization with areas largely maintaining its originality where one can view its clear blue seas an hills. Municipal authorities of the village have incorporated this village on tourist maps and advance visits and shopping trip hence managing the local economy and other elements of intangible cultural heritage in this village.( mills 2016).

Hoi An has  been promoting silk business through international silk festival held yearly  The occasion has pulled in the investment of seven customary silk towns from Vietnam and numerous others from countries like China, India, Italy, Japan, Myanmar, France, Spain, and Thailand among others.(le 2016).Tailoring in Hoi An are quick and modest. It is also one of the reason why such a variety of tourist visit hoi an. Quality, cost, and delivery time are the main concern of customers and the components that make Hoi An’s tailoring popular around the world. Retail sales of goods to tourist like shoes, bags are also helping them to gain economy rise. .(thanh 2016)
