Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of education found in newly opened schools by comparing their PRC Nursing Board Examination results and passing averages.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the PRC Nursing Board passing averages of nursing schools in Metro Manila?

2. Is there a significant decline in the quality of education being offered by these schools?

3. What measures are the government employing to control the decline in the number of board passers?

Summary of Findings

From the data yielded by the instruments, the researcher summarized the following:

1. There has been a shocking increase in the number of nursing students as seen in the number of examinees (nursing graduates) in the PRC Nursing Board Examinations for a period of 8 years--1999-2006.

2. With this increase in nursing students comes an influx of newly-opened schools which offer nursing as a course.

3. The increase in the number of nursing students does not mean an increase in the quality of education provided by these newly opened nursing schools. This is manifested in the results of the PRC Nursing Board Examinations.

4. CHED also had to closely monitor the newly opened schools to make sure they adhere to the requirements they have set.

Conclusions

In the light of the findings, the following conclusions are derived:

1. The quality of education provided by newly opened nursing schools have suffered in a move to take advantage of the business opportunity presented by the influx of aspiring nurses.

2. The number of nursing students grew considerably over the years due to the demand for nurses in rich countries like the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

3. The demand for nursing as a course grew apace with an increase in the number of nursing schools.

4. The quality of newly-opened schools comes into question as the results of the PRC Nursing Board Examinations decline over the years with the latest examinations held obtaining the lowest passing percentage recorded in the history of the PRC.

5. As the number of examinees grew, from these newly-opened nursing schools, their rates of passing decreased by a large margin.

6. The quality of education provided by these newly-opened nursing schools is poor mainly because of the fact that the schools were established for its profitability.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are presented:

1. Parents and aspiring nurses should take time to carefully study the credentials and record of performance in the PRC Nursing Board Examinations of the schools. All it takes is a little time and effort to do some research.

2. In an attempt to work
