The Telegraph was Invented by Samuel Morse a well known Painter and Inventor, Samuel loved how Science affects the people around him. Before the Telegraph was Invented Samuel was the President of the National Academy of Design, having this importance gave him responsibility. Samuel was traveling on a business trip coming back to North America when he heard of Electromagnetism from two men having a conversation. Giving him the idea of the Telegraph.

The Telegraph was invented between 1830 and 1840 by Samuel Morse who lived in the United States. The Purpose of the Telegraph was to carry out long distance messages, and send quicker messages. The operators of the Telegraphs used Morse code which was invented by Samuel Morse. Morse code worked by sending a series of electrical signals along the Telegraph which on paper would come out as dots and dashes and would be translated to Letters of the Alphabet by the operator. The name Dah is another way of saying Dash. The Telegraph was Invented during the Western Expansion and Reform, The Telegraph was needed in this time because there was no way of sending long Distance messages in a very short amount of time.

The first Telegraph message was sent by Samuel Morse from Washington D.C. to Baltimore, the message was “What hath God wrought”. This message was suggested by Samuels friends’ daughter named Annie Ellsworth. The First ever Distress Signal was called CQD which meant “All stations distress”. Later came the distress signal SOS in 1906, when the US adopted the Germans SOE and changed the E to a S because it was easier to put in Morse.

The Telegraph played a role for the Military and Railway services, the Military used the Telegraph to send Distress Signals and to send Orders. The Railway used it for Changes in course, delays, and sent the times they would arrive.

Due to the Telegraph many Milestones were set one included the Old Wire Road this was a Telegraph line that was from St.Louis, Missouri to Fort Smith, Arkansas this Telegraph sent signals that related to the Military. Another Milestone was when the Telegraph helped inform Northern Troops of need of help in the Mexican War.
