Teenage Suicide: The Tragedy That Can Be Prevented

Do you know someone who is suicidal? If you said no, how can you be so sure? The statistics for teenage suicide have increased dramatically over the years. In the song My Direction, Sum 41 had this to say on the issue of teen suicide:

Picture this everyday kids that just can't find a way.

Stuck in disarray can't find hope for better days. It's

the degeneration of childhood frustration. In the last 30

years teenage suicide has increased 300 in North

America; it is the second major kind of death in Canada.

Some of the major causes of suicide are depression, felling hopeless and helpless, emotional isolation, biological factors, the experience of loss, and stress. So how can you tell if someone might be suicidal? Well, some of the warning signs to look for are depression, the giving away of prized possessions, and verbal warning signs.

As one of the main causes of suicide depression is also one of the key signs to look for. First of all it's good to know the symptoms of depression. The main symptom is the feeling of sadness, helplessness, and pessimism. Some on suffering from depression may seem gloomy and apathetic, and express feelings of emptiness and numbness. The person may show deep feelings of isolation, worthlessness, and anxiety. They may find I difficult to concentrate and remember things, resulting in the decline and quality of schoolwork, and have trouble making even the most insignificant decisions. They will suffer from a drop in the ability to enjoy anything and avoid social activities, causing them to become withdrawn and uncommunicative. They may suffer form insomnia and/or other physical symptoms. Some of the things to look for are persistent sadness, low self-concept, physical complaints, and distancing.

The giving away of prized possessions can be another sign of a possibly suicidal person. A person who might be thinking about or planning suicide may give away possessions that are important to them such as a CD collection, a favourite article of clothing, jewelry, etc.
