Is Buying and Selling People as Slave Workers Universally Outlawed Today

When people think of slavery, the Atlantic Slave Trade is what usually comes to mind. People being shipped from one place to another, being bought and sold, and the end of slavery in the 1800's. Most people think of slavery as a part of the past instead of the present. However, it still exists today.

It is no longer referred to as slavery, but the circumstances are still similar. A slave is forced to do labor through mental or physical threats and/or abuse. Slaves are owned and controlled by an Ð''employer' who can sell or buy them just like any other property or good. Their freedom is no longer in their own hands, but is restricted.

Experts estimate that today there are 27 million people enslaved around the world.Ð'â„- 600,000 to 800,000 people are traded and exchanged every year. Around eighty percent of which are women and children. Shocking as it might sound; some are even in the United States. There are an estimated 14,500 to 17,000 smuggled into the United States each year.

Slavery was officially abolished worldwide at the 1927 Slavery Convention.Ð'â„- Even with the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights, the 1956 United Nation Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, and the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery, slavery still exists in many countries.

There are different kinds of slavery that exists today. The first is similar to the slavery that existed in early America. These slaves are considered properties by their Ð''master' or Ð''employer'. Another form of slaver is bonded labor. This is the most common form of slavery existing today. Poor people are tricked into taking a loan with themselves or their children as collateral. Even with just a small loan, a person could end up working their whole lifetime. It is impossible to pay off, leaving generations to become locked into slavery as well. Sex slavery is a form of slavery in which women and children are forced into prostitution. There are an estimated two million women and children that are sold into sex slavery.

Even though slavery is abolished, it is still a reality for many people. However, there are people trying to permanently eliminate slavery. Abdel Yessa was born a slave owner, but rebelled
