Chapter - 1

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Power transmission is one of the most important aspects of any machine; a lot of thought is put in place before installing a particular type of a power transmission system in place. Different types of machines use different types of power transmission systems for the purpose. There are many different types of systems that are available, they are as follows:

Chain drive system

Belt drive system

Gear train

Shafts and axles

The power transmission being selected is selected based on the following criteria:

Amount of power to be transmitted

Max continuous period of operation

Safety factor

Expected efficiency

Maintenance costs

Service cycle etc.

When we talk of motor-cycles, the power transmission system that is used is generally a chain drive. Since decades we have seen chain drives (i.e. a chain and sprocket system) being used for the purpose of power transmission in case of motor cycles. So why not get a new system in place of the chain drive. So on analysing the types of power transmission systems, our group came up with the following particulars:

If we go on using the belt drive, then we see that as the amount of transmitted power is increased there is a lot of slippage taking place, there by resulting in power loss. And also maintenance cost in case of a belt is pretty high the only advantage being, that the belts are lighter in weight. Thus the advantage gained is not enough so as to gain an upper hand.

Then if we move on to the gear train for the purpose of power transmission in a motorcycle, the distance between the engine and wheel is too much, thereby increasing the number of gears to be used and increasing the bulk of the system this is a considerations enough to discard the system, although the system is the best possible arrangement to get the maximum efficiency for the purpose.

So after discarding the above to systems we focused on the shaft system of power transmission, after initial bit of studies we came to the conclusion that a shaft driven system is one which we can use for our purpose in place of a chain drive.

This system of power transmission has been in use by certain companies but not much detail is available any where. The company using the system regards is the better way of power transmission. As not much detail was available our study has mainly been based on our imagination for putting up such a system to work. The system has been studied in the project work to follow.

Chain for driving purposes consist of several rigid links hinged together to provide a flexible loop which is passed over a driving and driven wheels like belts

The wheels called sprockets have projecting teeth which fit into suitable recesses in the links of chains enabling a positive drive to be obtained.

The most common chains used are
