  1. Background of the Problem

Safe Passage or Camino Seguro is a nonprofit corporation that provides a haven in the “toxic environment of the Guatemala City garbage dump” and for the locals in Guatemala City. It was founded in December 1999 by Hanley Denning, an energetic and idealistic young American woman from Yarmouth, Maine. The program provides educational and recreational opportunities for both children and families. Many of the locals make their living from being “waste-pickers” and trash recyclers. The program was started with the money from her personal savings account. A vacant church was donated for her to start her school. She visited the garbage dump to recruit future students. She personally recruited students from the area. She asked mothers to drop their children off at the church for a warm meal in a nurturing environment while they scavenged in the dump. On the afternoon of January 18, 2007, the 36-year-old Denning was killed in an automobile accident on the mountain road near Guatemala City. With the untimely death of humanitarian and philanthropist, Hanley Denning, Safe Passage a refuge for children of poverty, neglect and abuse struggle to proceed replacing the former heart-warming and dedicated leader.
