Remaking the Epic of America

The article, Remaking the Epic of America, written by David Brooks is about the myth of the sports movie that has defined American society and ruled the theaters in our nation.

Over the past few years, theaters in America have seen a succession of films with the same plot. Films such as, "Hoosiers," "Glory Road," "Coach Carter," "Remember the Titans," and "Miracle" are just a few of these sports stories that have captured the hearts of Americans. Throughout all of these films there is a central similar theme. They include a no-nonsense coach and an underdog team that rises up to beat the better favorite team with hard work and ambition. Each time the unsupported team wins glory over the more respected rivals the American tradition of social mobility is enhanced. When a story like this is repeated similarly over and over again and constantly attracts audiences it shows that the values represented in the film are parallel to those that the society believes in. With hard work, ambition, and a tough coach that inspires his team to success the formula will only bring success. These types of films also affirm that success comes to those who work together. These movies honor hard work and ambition. They represent the values of social mobility in America.

Everyone loves a good story that they can believe in and are inspired by. These American sports movies give just that to the public. A sense of hope that they can achieve anything they work towards and believe in. They represent America and the freedom that does truly exist.

The article showed the values of the American society are emphasized through the sports movie and that with so many of these similar movies coming out and doing well it shows that the public believes in the American social mobility and freedom values.
