Religion plays an important part on the way civilization is governed or ruled. In the early findings of culture dating back to stonehenge and the pyramids , religion has been shown as a key feature in daily life.

Mesopotamia and Egypt religion is displayed in architecture and artwork. Mesopotamians and Egyptians were polytheistic in both cultures being in bold statues that guard the kings throne. The Lamassu ,which in Mesoptamian culture is a HumanHeaded winged bull. In similarity the Great Sphinx or Khafre sphinx,which is a pharoh headed lion, is said to resemble Khafre himself. These anthropomorphic figures represent the importantance and divination of the ruler by having him guarded by both man and animal.

Religious monuments such as ziggurats were used to serve and worship the God. Cigarettes were built on a mud brick platform used to get them closer to "the heavens". Cigarettes were built for the gods as offering. Different ziggurats were dedicated to different gods. The ziggurat of Ur is dedicated to the moon god.

Unlike Mesopotamian believes Egyptians believed in the afterlife during that it was believed that the ba known as the soul flies out of the body want the call of personality traits travel to another place. It is believed that without the physical body the Ka cannot survive. Pyramid served as tombs for high priest queens and pharaohs Egyptians believe only the divine make it to the Gods in the afterlife. The tombs had many rooms and doors and were very large. ziggurats are temples with multiple levels. Ziggurats were public temples so they were open able to be accessed by all people. Pyramids were enclosed and usually had trapdoors to keep out intruders. Ziggurats on the other hand were said to have been built to house the gods. Ziggurats were the actual homes for the gods which was a key reason why only the priests were allowed to enter. In the times of Ziggurats the structure was also god like where as pyramids were more like reverence homes. Ziggurats are very different from pyramids in shape, use and style. In general the pyramids and Ziggurats most common trait is the religious purpose of it all which shows the importance of religion in civilization.
