Henry Huggins

By Beverly Cleary

Main characters are Henry Huggins , Ribsy and Scooter.

The story took place in Henry's neighborhood , in March.

There was a third grade boy named Henry Huggins. He had hair that looked like a scrubbing brush, and most of his grown-up front teeth were in. Henry always thought that nothing cool ever happened to him, except for having his tonsils removed when he was six, and breaking his arm falling out of a cherry tree when he as seven. However, on one particular Wednesday afternoon in March, something happen as Henry was returning home from his one hour swim at the YMCA.

Henry had stopped to buy a chocolate ice cream cone, and as he stood at the bus stop licking his ice cream cone while waiting for his bus to go home, he heard a thump, thump, thump, so he looked around, and there was a dog behind him scratching itself. The dog seemed to be a stray, and it also seemed hungry as he wagged his tail, and watched Henry eat the ice cream cone. Henry felt sorry for the dog and gave him the ice cream cone. Then Henry told the dog to go away but the dog sat at his feet. Henry started to think that it might be nice if he could take the dog home, since he always wanted a dog of his own. Henry decided to name the dog Ribsy because he was so skinny. Before Henry could take Ribsy home, he needed his mother's permission, so he took Ribsy to the phone booth to call his mom. Henry convinced his mother that Ribsy was a good dog and if she allowed him to bring Ribsy home he would feed and wash Ribsy. Henry and Ribsy went to the bus stop, but the bus driver told Henry that he could not take a dog on the bus. Henry went to the drug store and got a box to carry Ribsy home in, but the next bus driver did not let Henry on the bus, because the box was too small. Henry managed to sneak Ribsy on the next bus in a paper bag. Henry and Ribsy were thrown off the bus when the paper bag broke and Ribsy started running around in the bus. Henry and Ribsy finally got a ride home in a police car. Henry was finally home with Ribsy, and his parents were relieved to see that he was safe. Henry and Ribsy always did a lot of fun things together. Sometimes Ribsy would wait at a secret location for Henry until he came out of school. They also took trips to the pet shop. At one of his visits to the pet shop, Henry purchased two fish called guppies. The guppies were not very easy to care of. Henry took very good care of the guppies. He spent all his time and money on the guppies. The guppies started having babies, and very soon Henry's room was filled with jars of guppies. Soon Henry was forced to sell his guppies back to the same pet shop where he had purchased his first two guppies. One day, while Scoter and Henry were playing with Scooter's new football, Henry threw the ball, and it fell through the window of
