Programming Languages

Generations 1-4 programming languages all have a process-oriented approach that programmers would have to write each program individually and also for each specific computer type by using the binary number system and SQL. The data generated by Generations 1-4 was either input data or stored in a file and was separate to the processing. This crated more work for the programmers in having to write a new program for each specific function and processing command.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) organizes programming logic around objects instead of by process. The process and data processes are combined into the object. Similar objects can be combined to make a class. A class is a structured program that can be used for variety of similar layouts. This allows programmers to use a current written program and utilize it to create new objects for information to be filled in (new accounts and windows, etc). OOP’s save programmer’s time and money by creating new files or programs from other programs that have similar characteristics instead of the programmers having to create new programs from scratch each time.

Object-oriented programming and Generations 1-4 programming both use the same conversion techniques in writing programs. A complier is used in writing programs into machine language. 3GLs allow programmers to not have to know the details of machine and assembly languages and helps them develop the user interface easily and in a timely manner.
