Introduction:

The business line of the Procter & Gamble is related to the consumer goods. The major product includes the cleaning agents and the personal care products. It also includes the products like Kellogg’s and Pringle that are included in the category of Food and Beverages. The company has been working since 1837 in the United States of America. The company was founded by William Procter James Gamble. Since then Procter & Gamble has seen a number of junctures depicting rise and fall in the business. The company is intended to make the life of consumer as easy as possible.  The mission and vision statement of the Procter & Gamble developed particularly for the customers and employees. It reflects the intention and the trends of the future for Procter & Gamble. It states that “We will provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world's consumers. As a result, consumers will reward us with leadership sales, profit, and value creation, allowing our people, our shareholders, and the communities in which we live and work to prosper”. The business of the Procter & Gamble is purely consumer oriented. The customer is supposed to be the first priority. It also has some of the short slogans for its products. These are the taglines or the mottos that are used to differentiate the products from the competitors. For example, the slogan that is associated with the products of Gillette is, “Gillette. The Best a Man Can Get”.

        The competitors of the Procter & Gamble are different depending upon the line of business. For example, in the line of personal care good, the major competitors are Avon, Revlon, Colgate-Palmolive, Coty (COTY),  Revlon (REV), Inter Perfumes Inc. (IPAR), Elizabeth Arden (RDEN) and Unilever. In the grooming segment, Gillette competes Bic as the major competitor. In the field of healthcare products, the major competitors are Ecolab (ECL), Stephan Company (SCL), Dwight Co. (CHD), Colgate-Palmolive, and United-Guardian (UG). In the line of home care products, the major competitors are Church and Dwight Co, Unilever (UL), Colgate-Palmolive. In the line of family and female care products, the major competitors are Church and Dwight Co, Colgate-Palmolive and Unilever.

History of the Company:

        Nether of the two founders of the company were intended to settle the business in Cincinnati. The city was quite a busy place. It was the center of commerce and industry in the earlier part of the nineteenth century. James migrated from Ireland to the America and Williams came from England. Both the persons arrived at the Queen City of the West. Procter started the business by making candles while Gamble started the business making soap. The two might not have met had they not married to Olivia and Elizabeth Norris. Both the women were sisters and their father-in-law wanted the son-in-law to be the part of the business. Therefore, in 1837 on the suggestion of Alexander Norris, the business was started with the name of Procter & Gamble. The following timeline present the journey of the company till date including major events.

1837 - James Gamble and William Procter started to manufacture and selling their candles and soaps. They formalized their business association.
1850 - The Moon and Stars became an unofficial trademark of Procter & Gamble.

1859 - P&G sales augmented up to $1 million. The Company employed 80 people.
1862 - Procter & Gamble distributed candles and soaps to the Union armies during the Civil War.

1879 - James Norris Gamble, son of the founder and a trained chemist, made an economical white soap of good quality.

1882 - Harley Procter persuaded the associates to assign $11,000 to advertise Ivory.

1886 - Production of Ivory started at the Ivory dale factory.
1890 - After running the P&G as a partnership for more than 50 years, the partners incorporate to lift additional capital for growth.

1895 - King Camp Gillette developed the first safety razor for men.
1896 - Company’s very first color print ad was made.
1901 - American Safety Razor Company founded in Boston, Massachusetts, later became the Gillette Co.

1907 - William Cooper Procter became the head of the P&G following the demise of William Alexander Procter.

1911 - The company introduced Crisco, an alternative to cooking without animal fats.

1915 - P&G developed its first manufacturing facility outside the US, in Canada.

1917 - The Government requested Gillette supply razors and blades for the entire Armed Forces of the country during WWI.

1919 — 1920 - Seasonal purchases of Company products by wholesalers leads to uneven manufacturing needs and layoffs of labor and employees at Ivory dale.

1923 - Crisco backed cooking show son network radio, inserting the Company among the medium’s advertising innovators.
1924 - Market research department was made to learn consumer predilection and buying habits.

1926 - The company introduced Camay, perfumed beauty soaps.

1933 - The company manufactured Dreft, the first synthetic detergent for washing the clothes.

1934 - William Cooper Procter also died.

1937 - P&G celebrated its 100 years of successful business. The sales reach of the company exceeded $230 million.
1939 - The company aired its very first TV ad.

1947 — 1952 - P&G’s detergent technology directed to the development of a broad variety of products.

1954 - The P&G begins operations in continental Europe.
1955 - P&G developed Crest, the first clinically proven toothpaste with Fluoride.

1957 - The Company went in the consumer paper products business. P&G started the Charmin Paper Mills, a regional developer of toilet napkins, towels, and tissues.

1963 - Folger’s Coffee was introduced and the company entered the coffee business.

1968 - Pringle’s, with its distinct stackable shape and re-sealable can, was presented to test the market.
1972 - Bounce combines softening agents with a nonwoven sheet to soften clothes in the dryer.

1982 - The company increased its instruction and over-the-counter health care business.
