For our virtual art field trip we are first going to Edinburgh, Scotland to stop at the Rosslyn Chapel and take a look at the architectural side of art. Every single surface of the chapel is carved out of stone and reaches from forty-two feet in height to sixty-nine feet in length. I especially want to point out "The Apprentice Pillar". This pillar is one of the most magnificent pieces of architectural design that I have ever come across. Though I can't find any documentation as to the exact date this was built; we know that the chapel begun in 1446 and it took some forty years (Rosslyn Chapel, 2009). This pulchritudinous form has both depth and texture. This piece would have been made by carving; using the subtractive sculpting process. The artist used curvaceous lines when carving the graphically detailed spirals that circle the column from top to bottom. The textural contrast and the close attention to detail in the carvings bring unity to this architectural work of art.

Now, let's continue our journey over to one of the local interior designer's studios. The designer is Ian Smith and he is also located in Scotland. In this particular picture his use of color balances out the room perfectly. Patterns are used in the pillows as well as the valances. Hues of red and yellow seem to blend everything together turning this into a nicely balanced room.

Even though interior and architectural designs are different as far as the medians used are concerned, they are also quite similar. Both designers use a contrast of textures and hues to emphasize their piece. Patterns were evident in both designs as well. Take notice of the detail that is exhibited in both works of art. Though one is for the outside of the building and one is for the inside, both designs bring unity to that structure.

The outside design and the inside design effect one another for a visual experience. If the designer flawed and used the different elements of design wrongfully, it could have a tremendous effect on the inward appearance. The same goes vice versa, if the interior designer, for example designs an entrance way poorly (lighting out of balance, misuse of patterns, textiles, and decorations) then it will not matter how great the structure is, it will still be judged poorly.

What do you see in the images that I may be missing? What is your synopsis?
