Nationalism: Perspective of Independence

The perspective of independence is offered only for Poland. During the congress some were dissatisfied with the decision to grant independence to some nations while others where missing on the list.

Particularly Masaryk was angry about this fact.

Self-determination and secession must be given to people, in case bourgeoise uses this terms, it simply covers the exploitation of the people.

No self-determination in case the territory of the new state is not big enough to satisfy the needs of people - agriculture.

The USA joined WWI only after Russia became democratic, after the revolution. This change helped USA to build up the ideology of entering into war - democratic countries - France, GB and Russia vs. authoritarian countries -Ottomans, Germany, Austria-Hungary.

Churchill was suggested to choose language as a tool for self-determination. TheUS secretary if state opposed the idea of using language. Italy was also against, it wanted Dalmacia. And what about the colonies and their independence??

They established and published journal New Europe, advocating independence for Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia.

Churchill eventually changed the 14 points - regarding the future of AuHu.

April 1918 a the meeting of oppressed people from AuHu - they all agreed that there was no future for AuHu, immediately after that Slovak and Czech delegation met and decided on the common state.

Also the meeting between Italian officials and future Yugoslavia representatives failed to meet because of Italian government. This created the problem with deciding on borders.

During the Vers. it was problematic to decide borders of Poland. Also, war in Europe actually continued till 1923 - Russia, Poland, Lithuania.
