My Beliefs and Values Regarding Nursing

I feel that there are many characteristics that a successful nurse must obtain, as well as several different aspects that a nurse has to consider when caring for a patient. If a person is able to possess these qualities, such as recognizing health as a state of being that each client defines for themselves, but disregards the importance of the person they are treating as well as the environment, then the person is not a successful nurse.

Nursing is a specialized profession that provides the important link between the individual receiving care and the medical environment.

I believe that to be a successful nurse, you must learn how to care for a patient, rather than only treat the patient. The difference between caring for the client and treating the clients is the assistance that the nurse provides to allow the patient to grow as a person. I believe that if a nurse were ignore the patients need for care and treat only the problem then he or she would be failing as a nurse. One only succeeds as a nurse when they are able to look past the problem and see the person. Only then is one able to provide the quality of care needed.

People have different qualities that shape who they are. Nurses however need to posses certain qualities to excel in the field of caring. When a patient comes in the hospital or any medical setting they tend to be at their most vulnerable state. This therefore confirms the importance of the nurse's ability to succeed in treating the patient. During the patients stay the trust between the nurse and their patients is imperative. If the nurse were to be untrustworthy to the patient the quality of care that the nurse will give, or that the patient will allow will suffer. When caring for someone, I believe that one should see the person for who they are, rather than for whom you want them to be. As a nurse you should respect that each person is different and unique from the next, and it is important for one to understand and remain separate from the client by not taking over their identity. As a nurse one needs to be genuine in the care they provide by respecting the worth of each individual. Also during the process of caring for your patient you should let the patient remain true to their selves as much as possible. Being in a different environment as well as being susceptible, it is important to have the ability to accept. I believe communication is one of the most important qualities to have when entering the nursing field. Due to the amount of communication needed to properly treat your patient, the quality of care would suffer if the nurse was unable to effectively communicate with his or her patient. As one can see many character traits are needed in a person who wishes to peruse the career of nursing. I strongly believe that if a person is lacking in certain important aspect that their ability to perform as a nurse will suffer.

A person's quality of health is usually the reason a nurse comes in contact with an individual, whether it be poor health or the quality of health the individual possesses. A nurse must recognize that health is a state of being that people define in relation to their own values and lifestyles. Health is not if the person is sick physically but rather the condition of life that individual has. I believe that understanding this concept of health is important in nursing. When treating a patient if you were unable to grasp the clients view of health you may provided the wrong care for that patient. For example, if you were to have a client who worked on a farm and came in and stated to you that, "As long as I can work, I'm healthy," you would cater the care and teaching you give that patient differently from a patient who believes that when they sneeze they are coming down with something. Understanding the different kinds of health and relating them to your client is one of the important aspects of being a good nurse.

Environment is the most important factor in providing the best health care possible. I believe that health care is personalized for each individual and the best way to do that is through the environment in which you care for them. Environment is the sum of all the conditions and elements that make up the surroundings and influence the development of and individual.
