I glanced back at my movie ticket and observed the phrase “Last HolidayвЂ?, just what exactly is “LastвЂ? means and why did I pick this movie? I was pretty sure that my life does not relate to Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) who lives a small life tucked inside big dreams. In addition, I am a student and she is a shy cookware salesperson for a New Orleans retail outlet. Pretty much the movie started slow, it showed how Georgia handles cooking with the style of a master chef. Good thing, the turning point scene saved this movie from boredom catastrophe. After a small head-related incident at her wearisome work place, she learns her days are numbered. Director Wayne Wang was able to show Georgia’s great emotional distress, good enough to triggered a question that the audience would ask, “What if it were me who just discovered that I will die in three weeks?вЂ?

The motifs of “big dreamsвЂ? are pervaded throughout the movie, from the beginning until the end. At this point, the audience would wonder how would she turn her dreams into reality before she died? Logically of course is impossible, but entertainment comedy supposed to make everything is possible. Georgia’s next step to recover from her grief was pretty interesting: she takes all her money in her bank account (she cashes in all her IRA), then she embarks on a dream holiday vacation to a grand resort in Europe (Grand Hotel PUPP, Czech Republic). In this journey, she thinks that she has nothing to lose. As a result, she undertakes metamorphosis. She does everything that she would never do previously. Her transformation affects everyone around her, there is a charm inside her that has always been there but was never able to glow until this moment. Georgia’s recent unconstrained personality shake wins attention from staff and important guests. The conflict in the movie occurred when the owner of the company, which she worked for becomes convinced she’s a rival intent on sabotaging his business plans.

Whether the audience is a snowboarder/skier fans, spas pampered princess, or palatable dinner enthusiast, they can enjoy it vicariously throughout Georgia’s adventure in the movie setting. One may thinks that this movie is just as simple as living a lifetime of fun in just a few weeks, but it has deeper meaning than that. Even the story
