One of the very interesting phenomena that is incorporated into the ideology of the New Age movement is that of the Indigo Children or as how they are often referred, the Children of Light. The concept of the Indigo child describes children who The New Age Movement perceives as an evolution of the humanity. The attributes of the Indigo Children are not universal, but differ quite substantially with the various versions, but most often they are believed to possess paranormal abilities, such as mind reading capability. On the other hand, others believe that an Indigo Child is just as normal as every other child, but distinguish itself from others with traits such as intense sensitivity, creativity and others. Such children are considered unique for their special skills, which is not typical for children born until now.

The term Indigo children came originally from the 1982 book "Understanding Your Life Through Color," by Nancy Ann Tappe , who was a self-proclaimed psychic, claiming to be able to perceive people's auras. The idea of Indigo children was later popularized by the 1998 book The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived, written by the husband-and-wife, Lee Carroll and Jan Tober who state:

"The Indigo Child is a boy or girl who displays a new and unusual set of psychological attributes, revealing a pattern of behavior generally undocumented before. This pattern has singularly unique factors that call for parents and teachers to change their treatment and upbringing of these kids to assist them in achieving balance and harmony in their lives, and to help them avoid frustration."

There's a very good chance that a child born after 1992 is Indigo. Some claim that about 85% or higher of children born in '92 or later, 90% born in '94 or after and 95% or more born now are Indigo Children . There are reports that they started coming in the 80s. A big controversy of the Indigo Children has been the age group that defines them. The most common belief is that the Indigo Children are the current generation of new born children and those that are up to 8 years old. The Indigo children are those who are often rebellious to authority, free thinkers, extremely emotionally and sometimes physically sensitive, they are highly talented or academically capable as well. Usually they are intuitive, very compassionate or very cold in the social relations.

The traditional traits of an Indigo and Crystal children is that they are considered self-taught. It doesn’t take long for them to acquire knowledge from their environment by mimic, for example. But in imitating, they quickly learn how to improve and discover new ways of achieving their goal. On the other hand, such children can sometimes be seen as unsocial and aggressive to other children, due to their lack of respect to authority and old-fashioned systems.

Although, it may seem different, the Indigo and Crystal children are born in complete balance and harmony, which is reflected to their spirituality. Therefore, their somehow aggressive behavior is not actually intended, but is as a result of their overt openness and constant exposure of the truth. The strong intuitions of such children also lead to the immediate reaction that could be often negative, when he/she detects something negative.

The Indigos and Crystals have innate sense of high self-esteem and confidence in their own powers. This is evident in cases when they openly disobey or challenge someone of authority, or by their quick growing as independent characters even at a very young age. Their great potential, however, could sometimes be dangerous, as they cannot fully comprehend the boundaries of their bodies that don’t correspond to their level of mental consciousness.

The total inexperience of the Indigo children evident in their sometimes irrational behavior naturally leads to negative emotions. Nevertheless, in time they manage to recognize that there is something they can learn from the others. This way they gradually start building greater respect of their parents or adults, which at the same time doesn’t conflict with their awareness for great accomplishments.

The Indigo children have the unique attribute of being able to always see the Truth. This is not a generalization that relate to simple truths such as the notion that the planet is round, but that they can comprehend very complex information in regards to their spirituality, their purpose in life, something that most humans look for their entire lives but rarely manage to accomplish. This new offspring of children are very resentful of lies, deceptions misinformation. Their rebellious like spirits make them oppose any such occurrences and vigorously defend the truth without running away.

The Indigos are never satisfied with simple truth, but rather want to discover the root cause for everything and understand it for themselves. When they are not able to understand it at first, they would never stay quiet, but step forward and openly ask questions that can answer their curiosity. Some of the serious issues occur when such a child would not accept the misinformation presented to him/her by his parents. Although this is simply because there is conflict of ideas, the parents of an Indigo would insist on their interpretation of the truth and enforce it. Such situations influence the Indigos quite negatively, because they want to know the truth no matter what it is and have the freedom deciding what is right or wrong for themselves. Very importantly their motivation is not to expose lies or deceptions, but actually to establish a world with integrity, harmony with soul and spirit, that will make humanity think as one being. That is why Indigo children cannot deal with lies easily, because this moves them away from their mission and creates internal imbalance with their spirit. Unlike previous generations, the Indigos have a need for integrity that expands not just to their immediate surrounding but to their entire environment, such as their families, friends, communities, cities etc. Needless to mention is the fact that this generations is born in an age with advanced technologies for communication, which allows them to develop a global outlook.

One of the traits that will certainly bring positive changes to our world is the fact that the Indigo children are born free of race and gender biases. They don’t tolerate discrimination based on skin color or sex. Moreover, they welcome the diversity of races just as naturally as they welcome the diversity of colors in nature, which is a foundation of their culture. Rarely, there is any difference between a Caucasian and African person or someone born in Asia or Europe. To them we are all equal in the face of nature. Thus more and more children are becoming more aware
