Photographs can be a very powerful instrument of impact and persuasion. A photograph can say a thousand words. Many times, war photos leave the greatest impact and are image's you remember the longest. Nearly everyone can think of a few photos from each war that left an impression on them. One of the most famous photos from World War II is from the significant victory at the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The minute you hear about the battle of Iwo Jima, you automatically picture the soldiers lifting the American flag. The image of the four military men standing on top of the wreckage, raising the flag with their last remaining strength shows such passion and honor for their country.

A larger number of people are very familiar with this picture but are not familiar with the actual event and battle that took place on the island of Iwo Jima. Most people remember the battle as a victory but don't understand the importance of the triumph. The victory at the Iwo Jima Island was a huge stepping stone in the fight with Japan during World War II. The island was used as an air force base that was much closer for the planes to land when they could not make it back to the states for emergency repairs. These planes were used to carry bombs on long range missions which later played a vital role in the defeat of Japan.

The victory was an important one that helped increase the hope of the American people which is why the picture left such a great impact of pride in the minds of the people back home in the States. We remember the photograph as one of great success and share a great deal of pride with the soldiers in the picture. We see these soldiers as heroes for holding and carrying the nation's flag towering tall. This is the central message that is carried down through generations just through one single snapshot. In just one photo, so many words of impact are impressed into millions of people.
