Jim gets a hairball that is the size of a fist that he took from an ox's stomach. Jim asks the hairball; Why is Pap here? But the hairball won't answer. Jim says it needs money, so Huck gives Jim a counterfeit quarter. Jim puts the quarter under the hairball. The hairball talks to Jim and Jim tells Huck that it says. Huck finds a snake so he kills it and curled it up and put it on the foot of Jim's blanket as a prank.

That night Jim wakes up to find the snakes mate right by the dead snake, and the mate bites Jim's heel. tells Huck to chop off the snake's head, then skin the body of the snake and roast a piece

of it, and eats it.
