I. The need for blood and its donations.

A. Less than 5% of the population gives blood.

1. Fewer people give blood during the holidays.

2. One million fewer people give blood each year.

B. Blood is perishable and must be replaced frequent.

1. Red blood cells must be used within 42 days.

2. Other blood products need to use within 5 days.

II. The facts about blood and donating blood.

1. Every unit is tested for disease and to determine the blood type.
