George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards

George Whitefield is the best thing that ever happened to me. His preaching gives new meaning to my faith! I actually want to go out and hear and proclaim the good news, instead of sitting in a boring church with an old minister droning on about something. Whitefield’s voice is an aspect of my faith alone. It rings out with such triumph that shows that the good news he is giving is actually great. I used to think that I was being faithful to God by reluctantly sitting in a church and half listening. Now I feel the need to go to services, and I am happy to do so. George Whitefield has saved the image of the Church in my mind, and now it is like one big, happy family.

Whitefield is a Calvinist, unlike my former preachers. It is a change, but a change for the better. Whitefield emphasizes Church as a whole unified body. He thinks religion should be a family that accepts everyone, which is good for me since it is hard to make friends with my third arm extending from my chest. I don’t mind it so much in Mass though, for I can greet three people at the same time. Whitefield also tells us that we should let nothing come in the way of our faith. I used to skip Mass if something else came up, such as a sudden urge of tiredness or a stomach ache, but now I would go to hear Whitefield even if I was bleeding through all of my orifices.

The preacher John Edwards, on the other hand, is the worst thing that has ever happened to the Church. He preaches that things I do routinely will seen me straight to hell. And from what he says, Hell is not a pretty place. I always pictured it as bad, but not lined with the skulls of unbaptized babies. The only thing he says that I find consoling is the fact that I can repent and not go to Hell when I die. I am totally against this predestination stuff. Despite this similarity I share with Edwards, I am totally against his fire and brimstone. I don’t ant to be scared into following my faith, I want to go freely like Whitefield allows me to.
