Biomimicry

Defined as:

The science that studies natures models and then imitates those designs to implement practical uses to solve human problems.

Bio-mimic

Bio - Life

Mimic - Imitate

Biomimicry & Nature

Over 3.8 billion years of existence of different life forms have displayed the ability to survive by learning to adapt to natures changes.

The emulation of nature may be the key to sustainable future for our human race.

Living in harmony with nature and its resources will create an understanding of the importance of all life forms to be able to co-exist.

Organisms will be viewed as a potential and purposeful object that intermingle with the balance of life.

Biomimicry is a new science that has gotten a significant amount of attention from environmentalist, the medical field, and major corporations from around the world. The realization of our past mimicry of nature and the potentials for future imitations of the ingenious organisms ability to adapt and evolve over billions of years. (Wikipedia)

Biomimicry - Nature

Why study nature?

Nature has unique way of effectively utilizing its resources to its advantage

Only use the exact amount that is needed for survival.

Biomimicry may unlock future sustainability of coexistence of life with nature. Scientist are discovering organisms unique characteristics and how their adaptation in life may provide humans with the ability to live in harmony with the earths offerings. (Benyas, 2005)

Nature and most organisms have the ability to only use those resources that are needed to sustain life and reproduction. Many organisms rely heavily on one another to continue to live. Waste from one organism provides values to another, in this manner everything seems to be absorbed back into nature. (Biomimicry, n.d.)

Recycles its waste

Fuel for energy and life is all natural

Pulls from existing energy sources

Humans are depleting natural resources at an alarming rate

Waste is abundant

Man burns over 100,000 years of ancient plant growth every year

Live for today attitude

Biomimic Uses

Past

Flight - Food & Medicine - Energy

Future

Study of plants for energy consumption and medicinal purposes

Genetic engineered foods

Study of animals and their ability to adapt to harsh conditions and conservation methods.

Black Bear and its ability to hibernate through the winter

Hummingbirds ability to conserve fuel

Flight - One of mans most popular mimics of nature is the ability to fly like a bird. Soaring through the skies has opened up many opportunities for humans ability to reach destinations from around the world in a matter of hours. Reaching the far destinations of the continents allow for exploring and expanding mans role to tap into resources of different cultures, species and natures diverse offerings.

Food & Medicine - Plant & Fungus use for cures for illness and human consumption continue to increase has we develop a better understanding of how each organism interacts with one another and the role they play in survival.

Energy - The ability for plants and animals to utilize and conserve energy sources. As humans continue to deplete known energy sources at an alarming rate the key for replacing these resources increase.

Future medical uses may involve the biomimicry of the black bear and its ability to hibernate through the winter months. The black bear biological time clock can change their normal body chemistry to withstand the long cold winters of the environment in which they live. Scientist study the unique capabilities that the bear body goes through during the hibernation process for medicinal uses for humans. A bears cholesterol levels double during the hibernation stage and are significantly higher than humans but have no signs of hardening of the arteries. The urea stored in the kidneys is broken down into nitrogen forms and is used to build protein that protects the muscle tone and organs of the body. The bile juice forms ursodeoxycholic acid and can be used on humans to dissolve and eliminate gallstones. (Rogers, 1999)

Biomimic & Evolution

Will humans be the first species to control the evolution of their race?

Evolution of Species

Mans identification to the main building blocks of organisms can be the key to controlling their own destiny

Mans discovery of DNA and RNA may provide the answer for future survival of the human race

Infancy stages of genetic engineering and its long term affects on cellular activity within the organism

Based upon the gradual transformation that the evolution of species that has occurred over 3.8 million years man may be the only species that can consciously be able to have an impact on their future survival. Scientist discovery of the DNA can unravel many questions
