Encryption

Encryption is a process of securing information by making information unreadable without a key. Encryption has been used for centuries and is a vital tool in sending sensitive information while keeping it safe.

A key part of encryption is the cipher. A cipher is an algorithm used in encryption that transfers the original text to a code. The term used to get the information back to its original form is called decryption. Historical pen and paper ciphers are known as classical ciphers.

In the information technology field encryption has become more complex. Operating systems like Windows and Linux have successfully blocked average users to protect information. The problem with encryption is that human nature has a lot to do with the possible attack to get information. If data is encrypted to a certain user, a hacker can simply log in to the user and retrieve the information. In windows based applications (XP and below), all a hacker needs is the usernames ID and they can crack the password with ease. A boot-up disc called ERD commander will reset the password within 5 minutes.

There are two types of encryption. Private key encryption (or symmetric-key algorithm) is a tool used in many people. It has two keys. Both keys represent a secret between two parties that is used to maintain a private link. Public key encryption is a process which involves only one shared secret key. There are still two keys, however, but the private key is kept private. The public key can be distributed but without the valid private key the information is safe.
