Female Sexuality

I. Physiology

A. Vasocongestion- An accumulation of blood in the blood vessels of a region of the body, especially the genitals; a swelling or erection results

B. Myotonia - Muscle contraction

C. Lubrication marks only the beginning of female sexual response; however , in the excitement phase, a number of other changes take place, most notably in the clitoris.

D. Orgasm- An intense sensation that occurs at the peak of sexual arousal and is followed by the release of sexual tension.

II. Common Fallacies

A. Clitoral and Vaginal Orgasm

1. In adulthood woman have to learn to transfer the focus of their sexual response from the clitoris to the vagina, and to orgasm from intercourse.

2. Little girls learn to achieve orgasm through stimulation of the clitoris during masturbation.

B. The Single, Satiating Orgasm

1. Physiologically, after an orgasm, the vaginal region loses its engorgement of blood.

2. Most frequently, multiple orgasms are attained through masturbation rather that vaginal intercourse, because it is difficult for a man to postpone his orgasm for such long periods.

C. Sexuality and the Elderly

1. It is a popular belief that a woman's sexual desire is virtually gone by the time she is 60 or so, and perhaps ceases at menopause.

2. Sexual performance depends much more on the opportunity for regular, active sexual expression and physical and mental health than it does on hormone imbalance.

3. A study of healthy women in their 60s, all with a male partner, found differences between those who were sexually active and those who were not.

III. The G-Spot

A. G-spot (Grafenberg spot) - A small gland on the front wall of the vagina, emptying into the urethra, which may be responsible for female ejaculation.

B. There are two reason that the G-spot is important.

1. Researchers believe that it is the source of female ejaculation.

2. Researcher believe that there is a uterine orgasm.

IV. Psychological Aspects.

A. Gender Differences in Sexuality

1.Women were reputed to be uninterested in sex and slow to arouse and men were supposed to be constantly aroused.

2. A national study showed that 76 percent of White women, but only 53 percent of White men, said that they would have sex with someone only if they were in love and 77 percent for Black women and 43 percent for Black men, 78 percent of Mexican American women, and 57 percent for Mexican American men.

3. Men are more in the physical aspects of sex and have a "love'em and leave'em" attitude where a women is thought to be most interested I love and romance and to be concerned with the interpersonal more than the physical aspect of the relationship.

B. Sexual Development

1.Childhood and adolescent experience many people have are in masturbation .

2. Not only may women's relative inexperience with masturbation lead to lack of sexual learning, but it may also create a kind of "erotic dependency" on men.

3.Double standard- The evaluation of male behavior and female behavior according to different standards; used specifically to refer to holding more conservative, restrictive attitudes towards females sexually.
