No More 'Loosies' In St. Paul

POSTED: 10:29 am PDT October 13, 2006

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Paul is about to lose "loosies."

The City Council voted Wednesday to ban the sale of single -- or loose -- cigarettes.

The council cited the lack of health warning labels on single smokes and said their cheapness makes them attractive to minors and the poor.

Council President Kathy Lantry proposed the ordinance after getting complaints from neighbors about the sale of loosies, which are found at some convenience stores, gas stations and liquor stores.

"I think it's taking advantage of people," she said. "It really is a way that kids start smoking."

Other Minnesota cities have already banned the loose cigarettes.

Public health experts said the sale of single cigarettes to minors is a big concern.

Research indicates the sale of loosies dates to the 1930s, when Depression-era men and women couldn't afford a full pack of cigarettes.

Anti-smoking activist Jeanne Weigum, who is president of the Association for Nonsmokers-Minnesota, said the most important reason to ban the practice is that buyers need to know that cigarettes are harmful, she said.

"That's federal law. Cigarettes that are sold have to have a warning label," she said.

This article is talking how in a city they banned the selling of single or loose cigarettes. The reason for this is there cheapness is appealing to the poor and minors. And the lack of a warning label is also a reason. The council president panned realized the need for this after getting several complaints from neighbors about this issue. Many other cities in Minnesota have already banned the sale of single cigarettes.

So u can just add this open to the list.

I think this is an excellent idea. I for one hate cigarettes. I think they are incredibly and totally disgusting. No one should smoke them they don't make you look cool. They make u look like your tring to look cool. And they are really unhealthy and not good for your breath. They stink that make it hard to0 breath. There is nothing good about cigarettes. And they should put stricter laws on how easy it is to sell or buy them.

'Ecstasy' Was Just Vitamins, Jimmy Buffett Says

Singer Says He Paid Fine To Avoid Night In Jail

POSTED: 9:41 am PDT October 13, 2006

NEW YORK -- Jimmy Buffett said it was "old man medicine," not Ecstasy, that was found in his luggage by French authorities.

Buffett had a decision to make: spend the night in a French jail or pay a fine to clear himself of a crime he said he didn't commit.

Buffett said he chose the latter because he thought he could "better deal with the situation in a five-star hotel" in Morocco -- where he was heading -- than from inside a French jail.

In France, customs officials found what they said were 100 Ecstasy pills in Buffett's luggage. Buffett said they were vitamins. But he said he opted to pay the $380 fine and continue on to Morocco rather than spend the night in jail and fight the charge.

Well they can not right fully hold him unless they are one hundred percent sure that the pills we in fact ecstacy. I do not think it was right he had to pay a fine when with out testing they ca not be sure it was not just vitamins. So he should be able to get his money back.

McDreamy, Burke Brawl On 'Anatomy' Set

Actors Confirm Fight

POSTED: 6:40 am PDT October 13, 2006

NEW YORK -- In this corner, Dr. McDreamy. And in this corner, Dr. Burke.

It wasn't exactly a heavyweight title fight, but it was a pretty big tiff, as far as fights among TV actors go.

Dr. McDreamy and Dr. Burke nearly came to blows during an argument on the set of "Grey's Anatomy."

Isaiah Washington confirmed to People magazine that he and Patrick Dempsey got into an argument. He said they were like "two baseball players -- nose-to-nose." But like most baseball fights, he said no punches were thrown. He said their "faces are too beautiful for that."

Washington said the argument was over wasting time during filming. He said he and Dempsey made up. Washington's even able to joke about it now. He said he'd never been that close to Dr. McDreamy before and "he has really pretty blue eyes."

The New York Daily News said the two got into it in a beef over a cast member showing up late for a shoot. It's said that Washington grabbed Dempsey by the throat and shoved him.
