EPIC chapter five questions

  1. According to Bob, artists are like engineers because they alter the natural world to meet human desires just like engineers do. He also mentions that they both play an important role in the designing of new technology.  They are different because engineers do the actual building for a new design, and artists are mainly help engineers create a specific image on how the design is supposed to look and feel.

  1. The term innovation means coming up with new products based on technologies that already exist. One example of innovation technology is wireless charging. They took charging to a different level because charging was already invented, and they used the basic parts and created wireless charging. Another example of innovation technology are floating cars. Using the basics of regular cars, engineers were able to go even further and create solar powered, floating vehicles. The last example of innovation technology is a mechanical pencil. This can also be an innovation technology because originally there was just a wooden pencil. Now engineers and artist have designed a way to make pencils more appealing to the people by the look, and other features such as pressing a lever on the side to make led come out of the pencil. This was invented because it would have better appeal and engineering based skills to the people.

  1. Three examples of products that are produced by niche markets are hospitals, graphic designers, and web designers. One example of mass markets is telecom operators; this is because telecommunications are used by many. Another example of mass marketing is the radio station because, of course, many people use the radio every day because of its importance. The final example of mass marketing is television companies; this is because of the large population that uses TVs and customers are willing to pay more for the service.
  1. They had to understand how humans would emotionally react to the object. They design products that match the personalities of humans to appeal to them. They also use actual humans to test and review the products to give their feedback on how they liked the product. This helps improve design features to make the "look and feel" just right.
  1. It is very useful, critical to have a diverse team to design ideas because the more people you have, the more experts with skilled abilities you will have on your team. Also, different groups of skilled for workers have different task, and by the end when the final design comes together all parts are created to its best work.
  1. Engineers who are improving technologies are able to skip the first few steps of the design process. They are able to do this because they automatically have the problem and only need to think of improvements. Engineers who design entirely new projects always need to start from step one of the engineering design process. They should be required to do this because first you must think of a problem that no one has created a solution to yet. This involves starting from step one. Then as you go on, by the last step you should have a solution in which you did not improve, but upgraded. Engineers who improve projects do not have to think of a problem, but they improve a project that was already created.
  1. Redesigning a toothbrush holder requires lots of math and science when engineering is involved. One way it can involve math is by measuring the size of a child's hand in order to correctly compare it to the size of the toothbrush. Scaling would also be involved because they stated children have a better grip on larger toothbrushes, so it would be likely to scale the original size of the toothbrush into a larger size. A way that engineering might involve science is because in order to create a toothbrush it is a must to have scientific knowledge and parts to the project, this is so that the toothbrush will function very well. After all, it has to be someone's job to put together the toothbrushes after the parts are ready (engineers).
  1. If I could improve a technology that I use every day it would be my cell phone. I would improve it by adding a couple of features such as stylus pen, solar charging, and longer battery lifetime. Considering I use my phone basically every day, these would be considered some awesome features. I would use a mass market because, of course, phones are a big part of the world today; and not just phones, but all technology should be in a mass market because it is the center of attention in everyday life.
  1. Working on a team is very difficult sometimes because considering everyone has a different thinking process or idea, it is understanding that there will be disputes because your team will not always agree on the same concept. It is also better because when you have a variety of people on your team who think differently, it will get a lot of different, great ideas for the solution. The more ideas you have, the more the team has to consider the best one and create an outstanding solution.
