Business Ethics

In the last few months the issue of business ethics has come up so much, because of a scandal in one of Americas biggest companies Enron. the company inf;ated its share price while in actual sense they were supposed to be that much. They were able to do this by coercing their auditing company and making the financial position of the company to appear to be good.The company executives sold more than $1 Billion in stock while encouraging employees and other investors to keep buying? Many questions still remain unanswered like" was a crime committed?" (Time .com). Therefore while looking for an organization I looked into the past background of a company and some of its operating procedures, so as to gain some knowledge into it's operation procedures.

The main source of data was the Internet. The class had initially decided on a donation to the victims of the Tsunami disaster. I was able to get a listing of all aid organizations participating actively with the victims. Initially I came up with a short list of three organizations namely World Food Program, Care International, and World Vision.

After some research I found out that WFP was handling more casualties than the other two it's figure was 1 million, while Care International was helping several hundred thousand people, and World Vision had several thousand people as the number of people it was supporting with relief and rehabilitation efforts. Now all that remained was to find out which organization to donate to. This I did by looking at the how the particular organizations operate and their policies. Revision of chapter five on our syllabus was of great help here as it gave me insight into what to look for e.g. economic and social contribution, and quality of service.

While WFP is the bigger organization it was mainly dealing with third party organizations to assist people, while the other two organizations had their own people on the ground in charge of immobilizing aid to the affected communities. This is good for accountability purposes as it assures you as a donor that if ever a question arises later into the handling of matters e.g. misuse of funds, they won't start blaming third party individuals as they themselves will be liable for everything.
