The recent rise in terrorism has brought attention on the futures of children and families whose lives are primarily affected. The concern for children has been the focus with UNICEF for over 70 years, centered on ways in which early childhood professionals can help implement peace within children. Since war is an ongoing conflict within war-stricken countries it is important to develop children who are leaders of peace and tolerance within their society. Why focus on children and how will this come about? "The early childhood formative years are as good a time as any to inculcate in children a sense of responsibility and an understanding of outcomes as the basis of effective citizenship" (Ebbeck). A reconstruction of course curriculum must take effect as well as a newfound schema of an early childhood professional. The South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability Framework (SACSA) have already taken consideration of these ideas. The framework is devised based on constructivist theories of learning in which a child becomes aware of how it fits within the larger picture, to develop a sense of responsibility, and to realize the possibility of their future and the changes made possible for a positive future for their society. The environment in which the children learn must have them feeling safe and secure where they will be able to be accepting of their differences and those of others, ask questions, make mistakes, think creatively, progressively, critically. They should be encouraged to feel that they can contribute ideas, be optimistic, "reflect on, and take action in, shaping preferred futures" (Ebbeck). Children can learn in such environments where they can follow a model, in this case the early childhood professional. The main goal is to promote a curriculum for the children that fosters peace. In doing so, children will be taught ways in which they can help make a better place for their future. How a child will be able to create a sustainable economy, instead of continued industrial waste. Creating harmony with technology and the earth as well as exercising foresight. Much awareness of the progressive side of society and the possibilities of a brighter future will children then begin to think for themselves what they want for their future and how to come about it. The help from governments and society should work together to form an authoritative relationship with its citizens, especially those most vulnerable.
