The Interview Process

An interview was conducted with Monet McClinton, who is a single mother of two children. Ms. McClinton lost her job as a housekeeper two months ago and had come in to apply for food and nutrition benefits and Medicaid for her children. She has held the housekeeping position for ten years until the hotel closed and is having trouble finding employment. The client did not complete the paper application because she did not understand some of the questions on the application. The interview was a structured interview based on the services that the client wanted to apply for. The questions listed on the application were used to uncover the needs of the client and her family.

The Beginning of the Interview Process

The case manager greets Ms. McClinton and starts the process of report building. The case manager discussed the purpose of the interview while exploring the problem that has precipitated the application for services McClam & Woodside (2012). It was disclosed that the client will be required to have an interview every six months. McClam & Woodside (2012) stated, the beginning phase of interviewing identifies the roles of the applicant and her expectations during the helping process.

The Middle of the Interview Process

The second phase of the interviewing process is the middle. According to McClam & Woodside (2012), assessment, planning, and implementation also, take place at this time. The assessment allows the client and the case manager an opportunity to focus on the problem that brought the client to the agency. The case manager will need to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the client. Ms. McClinton’s weakness is limited education and unemployment. Her strength that was uncovered was that she worked for the same company for over ten years as a housekeeper until the hotel closed two months ago. Although it was uncovered that she has limited skills she has a good employment track record which is something that the interview can build on to accentuate the positive aspects that the client should focus on.

The End of the Interview Process

The end is the closing of the interview. According to McClam & Woodside (2012), the closing of the interview brings the first contact to closure. The closure and end in many different ways. Based on the services offered and the explanation received from the interview Ms. McClinton decided to go forward with her application for food and nutrition services and Medicaid.

Client Confidentiality

The interview with Ms. McClinton covered any concerns that she had to help her to meet the needs of her family. It was expressed to the client that everything that was said during the interview is confidential. The purpose of the information gathered during the interview is to help the client and will only be used for that purpose. According to McClam & Woodside (2012), agencies are required to provide clients information about HIPPA (Notice of Privacy Practices) and must secure client authorization for release of all information.

The strengths based approach requires maintaining a plan for Ms. McClinton that focus on her strengths. This
