Identifying Positive/Good News Message

The email consists of a goodwill message. This is because the message is friendly and registers the management’s gratitude towards the workforce. Such characteristics are often found in goodwill messages.

Goodwill messages often follow a formal structure like any other business letter. However, their messages are kind and warm, including the introductory paragraph prior to highlighting the purpose (Blumenthal 23). More importantly, it includes the main subject that prompted the authorship of the letter.

In the given letter, there is evidence of a formal structure. Despite being an email, there is standard memo format showing the sender of the letter, the recipient and the subject. There is also evidence of a formal tone that has been applied towards the letter, with the author thankful and kind albeit in a professional manner. As a goodwill letter, the email has kind and warm messages from the introduction, thanking the employees for their commitment prior to explaining the reason for their writing. In the end, the letter also spends quite a huge section of its course explaining the impending issue that was being brought to their attention, why it was important and the expectations going forward.

The letter should be more specific in the ways in which the employees are thanked. In this regard, Morris was only general in stating that he acknowledged the efforts of the various employees in the company. He should have pointed to specific occasions and critical situations. The message is also required to be short rather than of great length as Morris’ letter was.

Overall, the letter was good. It was personalized throughout with an extensive use of personal pronouns in the body. This fitted the profile of a goodwill letter by a great extent. There was also a touch of kindness and formality throughout the text and tone that maintained its identity as a business letter. Additionally, it looked original rather than an edited draft, as it included a personal note and a handwritten sign off. However, it needed to be shorter, more so in the paragraphs and also integrate more specific examples.
