I am going to talk about two different unions in different time ages. I am going to explain the differences between the two things. The two unions that I am going to talk about is American Railway Union and Transport Workers Union of America. There are in two different times. Transport Workers Union of America still exist now and the American Railway Union ended because a certain act was born.

The American Railway Union (ARU), was the largest union and the first industrial union in the United States. The American Railway Union began on June 20, 1893, by railway workers in Chicago. The leader of the American Railway Union name was Eugene V. Debs. Eugene V. Debs was a fireman the later on in his life, he was a Socialist Presidential candidate. By 1894, ARU had over 140,000 members nationwide. Beginning in August 1893 to March 1894, the Great Northern Railroad, cut the wagees of the people.

By April, the ARU wanted a strike and to shut down the railroad down for 18 days so people wages wil go back to normal. This was the first and only victory or joy that the ARU's had. By September and March, the Pullman Palace Car Company cut wages for the people by 30 to 70 percent. The Company named after the town and the owner of the company and named George Pullman. George was rich and he owned the land, homes and stores.

People had no choice but to live in his homes and buy from his stores. Since the wages dropped, people can not afford many things. In June 21,1894, the ARU want to go on a Pullman Strike. ARU workers refused to use trains with Pullman cars. They became success.Since that happened, Pullman ordered Pullman cars be attached to U.S. mail cars which was a a backup for postal service to bring to the Federal Government. When the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was made in 1890( illegal for any business combination to restrain trade or commerce.

After that Act, the ARU went crashing down. The President Cleveland wanted 20,000 federal troops stop the strike and to run everything with Pullman. By July 7 1894, Debs and seven other ARU leaders were arrested. The strike was down when Debs spent six months in prison in Woodstock. The ARU stopped and Pullman reopened everything of his. This Union was different from the one we use today because the Sherman Anti-trust act soon died out.

That was the only problem for the Union. Without that act, I think the Union will still exist. Transport Workers Union of America was a United States labor union that was founded in 1934 by subway workers in New York City.
