Google: [pic 1]

Google is a multinational technology company known for its popular search engine and other internet services. It also includes advertising, search, cloud computing and software. It makes most of its profits from Adworks, an online advertising company that gives advertising relevant to the searches on the search engine. Google’s headquarters is in Mountain View, California which is called the Googleplex. It offers various products other than the search engine like for email Gmail, cloud storage Google Drive, an office suite Google Docs, a social network Google Plus and web browser Google Chrome. The corporation is known to have more than one million servers in data centers around the world. It is estimated that

Search engines process about one billion search requests on a daily bases. ( Carr 150-153)

History:

a. When and How Google was founded

Google first started as a research project called the ‘BackRub’ in January 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were PhD students at Standford University. They changed the game by coming up with a theory for search engines. While studying the BackRub’s output, that consisted of backlinks, they were ranked by their importance. They soon realized if they out this theory for a search engines for getting the most important to least important on the search, it will produce much better results. They called this technology the PageRank algorithm. Originally the search engine was used for Stanford’s website; the actually Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997. The incorporated the company at Susan Wojciki’s (a friend) garage in Menlo Park, California. (Carr 155-156)

b. Growth and popularity

In 1999, they moved their office to Palo Alto, California, which is home to many of the technology company. Google began to sell advertisements with the search which gained them a lots and lots of money. In 2001, they leased the office at 1600 Amphitheater Parkway in Mountain View, California which is now known as the Googleplex. Three years later they bought the property for $319 million. The word ‘Google’ was so common now that it was added in the Oxford English Dictionary indicated as “to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the internet”. As of September 2013, Google has 70 offices over 40 countries. By September their revenue was reported $14.89 billlion. Google is the second most valuable company or brand in the world after Apple. The Google’s search engine is recognized all over the world. It is used by all whether they are students, teacher, kids, adults etc. Google has affected many aspects of a person’s life from their email, to their GPS, information and now

Google’s impact on society:

a. Google’s impact on economy:

Google’s generated about $94 billion of economic activity through their search tools and economic activity. They generated $64 million in Washington D.C. alone from their activity. Their impact includes of Google Search, Ad Works, Ad Sense, and Google grants. (Tsukayama) Google has impacted economy in a major. The vast growing company has everybody’s attention. It started out as a project and it is now part of everyone’s life. Every click on their advertisements generates them $2 dollars so you can only imagine how much is Google by people and how much revenue they are easily able to generate. After Apple, Google is the only company that generates such a large amount of revenue and has such a great impact on the economy.

b. Google’s impact on general public:

Google’s search engine has made life very easy. According to the article Is Technology Making Us Stupid, Google has changed the way we handle and store information. (Genevieve) We no longer memorize think or have the deep knowledge people used to. Now if someone wants some information, they just go to Google, get the answer and forget about it. When we read books or really put ourselves deep in something that is when we gain actual knowledge. Everyone uses Google from middle school children to students in universities. There was a time when we had landlines and had to memorize everybody’s phone numbers. That number was so deep in our brains that it was hard to forget. When we use Google, the information does not hit our brain so deep. We might remember it for sometimes but does not gain us any knowledge. To people nowadays, Google is so easy to access, it is on everyone’s phone, tab, and computer etc. People do not care about learning anymore, mostly students, they care about getting things done.
